Easy Steps for a Killer Cup of Coffee

Why is it that the majority of us kick off our days, morning after morning, drinking a cup of crap coffee? I’m willing to say that the state of coffee drinking in

America has gotten so bad that most of us wouldn’t know a decent cup of Joe if it was splashed on our crotches accidentally by a drive-through employee at McDonalds.

The fact of matter is that most coffee consumed in America is either stale or just plain poor quality. The good news is there are some suggested solutions that can help you save time and money, not to mention your taste buds, the next time you decide to pour yourself a nice hot cup of Joe.In his article “Why Your Coffee Sucks” Brett Kelly outlines some key steps that each of us can take to ensure a perfect cup of coffee every time we reach for the pot.Problem number one: coffee goes stale in as little as two weeks after roasting. Yup you got-it that means that that expensive imported bag of coffee that you just bought last night is probably well on its way to becoming your next stale pot of coffee.Problem number two: think you’re saving yourself time by bulk grinding your beans? You’re not - the only thing you’re ensuring is the successful leaching of what little flavor is left from your already stale coffee. According to authorities, ground coffee will begin to lose its flavor in as little as 20 minutes after having been ground.Ingredients needed for a killer cup of coffee:

  1. Clean water – the author prefers use bottled or Britta filtered.
  2. Good Coffee – to get a good coffee you can do one of two things you can either roast them yourself , using an automated machine or in a frying pan, or you can order freshly roasted beans from a local shop or off of the Internet. The author recommends a site called Sweet Maria’s with prices comparable to Starbucks. (apparently the beans are roasted the day that they are shipped).

Grinding:If you choose to follow the advice above you’re going to have to get yourself a grinder. Hand cranked grinders are apparently the best, but an electric one with blades should do the job just fine.Brewing methods:

  1. Take that old coffee mate that you got for your wedding a pitch it. According to the author these things are garbage.
  2. Pick yourself up a pour-over brewer and a set of filter papers (Mark Prince has a recommended article on using a pour-over brewer)
